Striving to be Great Leaders: Military and Business

Leadership creates avenues for growth among groups of people and that is important for developing organizations. While the study below discusses military leadership, the same concepts appear present in a large body of business leadership research as well. It helps us learn that military veterans can be groomed to take on leadership positions and business minded people may consider the military as an appropriate pathway to learning the skills needed to be strong career minded executives.

The study looked at the development experience of junior military officers and found that military leadership development is a process that is defined by establishing oneself as a vocational lead through experience, confidence, mission clarity and concern for their subordinates.    Being and becoming beginning military leaders: Implications for leadership learning

The report discusses that process as ,“being, becoming, and belonging.”. Leadership is a developmental process and one should avoid thinking they are a born leader or that they already have all the skills needed to become a strong leader. I have met many people who have leadership potential and typically it is those who are not first to claim their leadership abilities.

Leadership is often seeded with those who have the inner confidence to know about themselves and are willing to take the feedback needed to grow and develop. If you are the type who proclaims leadership without putting in the time and work needed to gain those skills then you are likely to do more harm than good to your organization.

Leadership comes from a place of needed validation versus genuine development. Watch, reflect/learn and practice your leadership abilities.

1. Watch what real leaders do in situationsand gain experience.

2. Reflect/Learn about your experiences and self and gain knowledge.

3. Put into practice your leadership skills to help others and your community.
