Using Color to Pair Rooms to Impressionists Art (Chewy Agrees to Everything for a Treat)

Maybe you're looking to spruce up a room or create a gallery wall that makes people say, "Wow!" instead of, "Oh... was that on clearance?" Pairing artwork is actually easier than it looks, and I've been reading up on different ways to do it. It's been helpful because I've collected a lot of photographs and paintings over the years, and at some point I should probably stop stacking them in closets and actually hang a few.

I also sell some of my artwork from time to time. I'm not expecting to become the next Picasso or retire on painting seagulls, but it's a fun hobby. Honestly, one of the best lessons I've learned is this: if you enjoy doing something, keep doing it. Who cares what everyone else thinks? Art is one of the most subjective things in the world.

I've walked through galleries and stared at a painting with a $2,000 price tag thinking, "Did someone accidentally leave that there after painting the living room?" Then I've created pieces that I thought belonged in the recycling bin. Other times I've finished something, stepped back, and thought, "You know what? That's actually pretty good." Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder—and sometimes in the eye of the person holding the credit card.

One of the simplest ways to pair artwork is by using color. Pick a dominant color—maybe blue, green, purple, or pink—and then choose other pieces that share enough of that color to create a visual connection. They don't have to match perfectly; they just need enough in common that your eye naturally groups them together.

This is one reason Impressionist artwork works so well in home décor. It's often driven by mood, light, and color rather than precise detail. If you're trying to create a calm room, a cozy space, or something bright and energetic, selecting artwork with a consistent color palette can help tie everything together.

And don't think you have to buy all your artwork from one artist. Mix and match. Pair paintings with photography, woven tapestries, wood accents, or even coordinate them with your wall color, furniture, or area rug. The goal isn't perfection—it's creating a space that feels like you.

Besides, if someone asks whether your gallery wall was professionally curated, just smile confidently and say, "Absolutely." There's no need to mention that your design process consisted of moving pictures around seventeen times and asking the dog (Mine is Chewy and as as long as I give him a treat he will agree to anything.) for a second opinion.
