The American Dream is important, and it needs our support. Yet, according to the polls below, it is becoming increasingly difficult for many to achieve. There are likely many reasons for this. If you asked the average person, they could list several factors that contribute to the decline in perception.
This highlights the importance of creating more opportunities for small businesses and investing in the development of human capital. Over the past few decades, wealth has become increasingly concentrated in fewer hands, while partisanship has intensified, limiting our ability to make strategic, long-term decisions.
Many may also feel that opportunities for upward mobility are shrinking. People want the chance to launch a successful venture, move up the economic ladder, not be hinder by bigotries, and improve their lives, obtain a good paying job, but for many, this seems increasingly difficult—if not impossible. Addressing this requires better education, greater commitment to shared sense of destiny, stronger support for entrepreneurship, and wages that keep pace with inflation.
I have heard from people who discuss these issues that they feel their voices are not heard and the average American concerns are not part of the discussion within an increasingly wealthier and interconnected political class. While I have not formed my full opinion I would say there is some merit in those concerns. If nothing else it should raise an eyebrow.
Ignoring the concerns outline in reports like this is neither fair nor constructive. This is not the first time a poll like this came out. We may need to consider electing new, less entrenched politicians who are genuinely committed to their communities. It may require more of a bottom up approach to changing the environment. That doesn't neglect the many good politicians who genuinely seek to serve. Let us make a distinction between those who serve themselves and their parties and those who serve everyone.
In today’s environment, the loudest voices often dominate, leaving most people with good ideas unheard. If you believe this toxic atmosphere isn’t a problem, I encourage you to read on. It may not be intuitive but when the economy appears ok but the sentiment is low then it moves across the economic divide and into the social one (In Theory).
It can be reversed but there would need to be greater commitment to the central universal values that come to define who we are. Of course a different person, a different perspective, a different idea may come forward. This is called a discussion and discussions lead to solutions. This is why we support freedom of speech and we should encourage that within our decision making process (In Theory).
