Military service provides the knowledge that you won't receive in college but is so relevant to self-development that it can enhance knowledge from academia applied through experiencing challenges and leadership in real time. There something to be said for being a fully well rounded person and having real life experience matched with theoretical book knowledge. Think about how being in the military and being a scholar puts you in a place where you are/have mastered the skills from multiple domains.
