Justice is a root idea that has existed since the beginning of human time and is fundamental to good social development. People want a society of social order through consistency and fair application of that justice throughout. We must do what is right to strengthen the institution as it fulfills its responsibility to society. Failure to enhance will highlight the significance of a highly diverse society on the cusp of major technological change that could encourage cultural shifts. Justice is a shared universal medium that is carried forward throughout time due to its necessity to social life. It may take different forms but is fundamentally the same. Breaking the chain of that passing because of bigotries, extremisms, hate, social networks or corruption could have a long term impact on institutional trust. It is also disrespectful to those good officials who are doing what is right. A failure to change when it is necessary is fundamentally a rejection of the communities they are serving. Let us look at an example of where we might be able to improve.
Hypothetical Example for Learning
Let us say that someone wanted something and spread rumors and those rumors were intended to harm. However, the source of those rumors was intentionally criminal and dishonest causing a chain of events on victim (s) through gullible homogeneous clan members and eventually attracting extremist groups. It highlighted how "out-group" can be defined by very superficial things and in turn, can fall under a different expectation. Dark triad traits are so common that even protecting the elderly, minorities (of any type), women, free practice of religion, the ability to engage in public life, have a political opinion, and even children were not seen as of higher social value when compared to protecting one's own ethnocentric identity and the corrupted networks that allowed such behaviors to occur in the first place. A default in the system led to community concern and correction because they believed in what values we should stand for as a people (Something some officials have unfortunately forgotten.). Some members of the local system intentionally failed to do what was in alignment with our social contracts and doubled down on protecting the ability to commit similar acts of transgression in the future if the need arises, or a good citizen raises a voice to protect others, or one says "no" to protect the core values of our society. Federal oversight was forthcoming to ensure that in the future such local systems focus more on the needs of society and its social contracts (i.e. Constitution, Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech, and Civil/Human Rights.) versus social networks, racial/religious concerns/ or political leanings.
Envisioning Alignment with Societal Values
Imagine if we did the opposite of what would normally and morally be acceptable in this instance. A complete default with no back stops, rewarding of very poor behaviors, and because of that future problems will arise putting victims, targets, and others at risk. Perhaps we can envision what a positive result might look like with some level of change to increase institutional effectiveness, outcomes, and trust. The spectrum of possibilities and the outcomes determine who we are and what we believe from an institutional level to be morally acceptable. Choices would indicate an intentional disrespect toward those freedoms we, our fathers/mothers, and grandfathers/grandmothers all sacrificed to uphold. If that is in alignment with all that society would expect then we are golden but if that is not what society would expect we can add it as a data point as to why change and correction may be needed. The ramifications of unchecked dehumanization are not well known but history often provides a guide.
Optimistic Outcomes
As an optimist, one can say that the vast majority of people do the right thing, believe in the right thing, and have a good heart. That also applies to officials and anyone else in the country. If you meet enough people from various walks of domestic life you will come to understand their kind nature. That being said, there are those out there who are predatorial, dishonest, full of bigotry, and have no problem misusing any power they may have to harm others (indicating deeper dysfunction. Its a human issue and applies to all people from any locality.) Thus, one could say that as an institution full of good people for the most part it is striving to fulfill society's needs as it was intended. One might also conclude that there are bad apples and when such bad apples are left unchecked, and/or policies protect such bad apples, there are outcomes that are not in alignment with what we believe as a people. Simply doubling down again and again to reward and protect hate and extremism wouldn't seem to be the wisest and most logical choice (Sure, some of us love to hate but it weakens us all when segregationists are given a free hand.). Thus a more logical approach will come forward from necessity. That necessity is based in its very root essential values that tie all men/women together into a shared sense of national purpose that reaches beyond superficiality. The outcome and propective is very positive as it comes to define a piece of who we are (i.e. soul of a nation.). I think we are a great people and that greatness with shine through to debunk the segregationist perspectives and the protection of corruption. According to some research We Can Learn from Errors.
*This is a hypothetical example for learning purpose. It is a type of thought experiment on freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the Constitution, and human/civil rights. Take with a grain of salt .
