Tips On Getting Stronger and Building Muscle (Fitness and Health)

Fitness doesn't happen overnight and it takes consistency and peristence to eventually achieve one's goals. Not to mention the amount of learning that is needed so your not spinning your wheels and wasting hours. I would read and read and try the bad advice and did not go too far.

Below are a number of things I have learned over the years.

-75% -80% of rep fatigue.

-Protein intake is a big factor.

-Sufficient water is a factor.

-Consistency and a schedule helps.

-Balance between short cardio intensity, weight training, and balance/flexibility.

-Complex movements should be mixed in.

-Vary the routine to avoid a plateau.

-Engage in sports and activities

-Calorie count and quality counts.

This is a pretty good article. If you are seeking some virtual fitness training send me a message to the right.

The Psychology of Corruption (Corruption and Hate Thought Experiment)

Let us continuing to explore the concept of corruption and its impact on society. These are difficult concepts to discuss as people have strong opinions and often confuse purpose and outcomes. Likewise, when there is corruption it is sometimes comingled with other poor behaviors such as hate. Those who engage and protect corruption is about a perspective of thinking about the importance of oneself in relationship to others in society. If you feel obligations to society, administators of corruption will make one choice, and if they feel more obligaton to self or a group (i.e. clan in this example) they make other choices.

The philosophical thought experiment for learning goes something like this...

A group of people engaged in mistreatment of people they thought were sub human based on some factor (race, religion, politic, etc. pick anything really) and took it upon themselves to harm and exploit victims for self gain. They did some serious damage to these families (kids and sick elderly) and bragged about the harm they caused. Bigotries and corruption mixed with  extremism level aggression. No consequence because they were part of the same social group (some worked together).

Unchecked hate was designed to enrich the perpetrators and harm out group members. Later it was discovered that similar behaviors were happening to others. It was fairly widespread and people knew about it but did nothing (All the machoness meant nothing when it counted to protect their community.). The ones who wanted to do something simply couldn't out of fear of social rejection (or more).

Complaints of sexual explotation, civil/human rights violations, freedom of religion violations, preference in courts and many other factors came out that indicated a clear benefit for clan members. In their totality they helped show that a central group of poor actors could intentionally warp a justice system (Why it was important for people from the inside to report such behaviors. Good officials muted with unwritten codes learned implicitely.)

In this hypothetical example money would have been a major motivational factor and so would certain religious, racial, or other factors (Think any difference. Eye Color Experiment/Exercise). Social position and standing might be another. A closed system was discovered where justice would be nearly impossible under the circumstances. Complaints and whisteblowers were often put on secretive lists and retaliated against for years which allowed the problem to persist long after it was discovered. Intentionally no recourse for victims. Investigations into perpetrators blocked.

Eventually so many complaints and issues came forward they simply couldn't deny it any longer or use their positions to shield clan members (We can go through at a later time what data/evidence could be used to prove corruption and negligence.).  They were forced to deal with the problems they created and they went out of their way to hide and protect. i.e. keeping the network intact and able to repeat behaviors. Pushing the problems on the victims by defaming and dehumanizing them no longer was an acceptable path and the tool became less sharp the more they blunted it against everyday concerned citizens.

Opportunities to improve for the benefit of everyone appeared dismissed. In this example there is more going on and there is a good chance a positive result will occur. However that required moving out of the local system. Bigotries may or may not still exist but the social bias would be less pronounced. "If it is learned, it can be unlearned" Jane Elliot (eye color experiment author)

Most would agree that such a system is not at its optimum and would be worthy of some change; at least if it is trying to stay true to mission. Certainly we can understand some of the motivations for the poor behaviors. The same motivations apply to corrupted officials as it would be to street crimes. They are rooted in our psychology but some are more likely to act on these when compared to others. When you want something and find a path to do it, even if illegal, some will do that while others will not.

The psychology of it is something worth looking at. Searching around I found this Cognitive Psychology of Corruption

*This is a philosophical thought experiment designed to explore the concept of corruption and hate. Take with a grain of salt. 4 stages were so far defined from this story. We can write a positive ending to it but are exploring it a little. Relax and take a breath.

South Carolina Fires and Firefighter Health (Firefighting and Service)

Firefighting is a tough job sometimes and it can be dangerous when you have forest fires and entire areas burning out of control. This article on Wildfires scorch the Carolinas, SC Governor McMaster declares state of emergency shows the danger and awe of the risks of the occupation in general. Hundreds of full timers and volunteers putting themselves in harm’s way to help protect life and properly. It seems to so counter intuitive to the instincts of running from danger.

One should have the greatest amount of respect for these men and women who step beyond what would be expected to help their communities. As we progress as a society, we shouldn't lose sight of those who help build that society and have sacrificed for that society. These are a different breed of people. This is probably why as kids we looked up to them and wanted to be them.

This is also why I advocate and respect first responders and others because they are willing to go the length for others. The science of extreme altruism: why people risk their lives to save strangers. Personally, I would hire and groom them for a job before many others. Character is something that is created deep from the inside and it is hard to teach. The proof in the pudding is their ability to choose to help when they didn't have to.

If you read the article below you will find the risks and morbidities of firefighters that include cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mental health disorders. Just being aware of these risks can be helpful. Firefighter Health: A Narrative Review of Occupational Threats and Countermeasures. It would be nice if we can do a little more to help them. The Wealthy Drive Consumer Purchases. Are entrepreneurs the champions of communities?

Things fall into place when your wealthy reaping the rewards of good schools, nice neighborhoods, opportunities, cushy jobs and the ability to spend baby spend! Dreaming what life would be like with millions in the bank....(Actually, money isn't the most important thing in life but it does help and it helps do good stuff when used for prosocial lofty purposes. Make money, live a good life and do good with it.)

Half of Consumer Spending Driven by The 10% Wealthy Top

The other day I had a conversation on the benefits of capitalist and one was increase in wealth and general well being of society. On average capitalistic societies do better than others. We also discussed some of the risks that include over concentration of wealth, policies that cater to wealthier individuals, and the general difficulties of small business to compete in certain fields that lead to empty downtowns.

One solution would be to ensure small business can start, obtain funding and can support families to continuously generate wealth locally. Responsive to community needs through broadbased grassroot capitalism. Innovation can change markets and lead to competitive advantages when a small business invents something and capitalizes on it to expand industry locally. The entrepreneur could be the new champion in wider wealth creation and the protector of capitalism's long term resilience.

Keep in mind these are philosophical discussions and there are many reasons to agree and disagree.

Escanaba City Council Meeting (February 20, 2025): Clean Water, Community Engagement, Business

Good news is that Escanaba is doing very well on these issues and is a model for other places in terms of water quality. The risks of heavy metals are something that is impacting many other communities due to years of not understanding how pollution functions and its impact on us. Heavy Metals Water.

We are likely going to find these issues in some cities and towns because for years we didn't understand or address well. We don't often think of environmental impacts in our economic calculations.

Likewise, there is a cost to environmental regulation that can slow down business. Someday we may create the technology to completely reverse environmental impact (fingers crossed).

Thinking about the water quality is important because people want to live and do business where they know the water is clean. That is something the city does well. Hats off! It may seem small, but it does have a level of importance for the health of community and in some ways be a tipping point in a decision to start a local business where one can live.

Two new businesses appear to be coming to town which includes a hospice center and a warehouse.

Also, you will see that the community is filling up the boards and being involved and that is a good thing. People in many other places don't take much stake in city governance but here people are involved and active.

Bird Extinction Reduced with Increased Biodiversity (Nature and Science)

Who doesn't like watching birds? Birds are a highly intelligent creatures that are influenced heavily by their environment and disruptions in migration patterns. Some species are more sensitive than others and their numbers decline under various circumstances.

Maintaining the Highest Commitment to Justice (Corruption and Hate Thought Experiment)

Justice is and always has been an important part of social life because it sets the playing field and the underlining rules of society. Those rules applied fairly create an environment where business and individuals can foster because of the shared interest in maintaining the rule of law (An example might be how the Renaissance was influenced by certain freedoms and sharing of knowledge that led to wider innovations). In our hypothetical philosophical example justice defaulted based on variance of differences between the perpetrators and victims. The victims have no recourse and that appeared intentional to force a local social order where some are benefited and others disadvantaged (A little like a gang or cartel).

In this learning example the victims were not only out-group members but were also targeted to help enrich members of a social group (known as "The Clan"). During that process a wider network of corruption was discovered leaving victims unprotected (In this example they were really good at coordinating various elements as though it was done many times before.). The laws, the rules, the purpose of justice derailed to protect what they see as their own. While the vast majority of officials that work in these fields do so with honor and integrity, we do sometimes have social networks and extreme beliefs that can derail justice.

[It is important to support the institution and its high functioning becaue it serves an important purpose in society. Serve being a key word here. People put themselves at risk everyday to protect us and there is no higher honor than this. Think about that for a second. We respect vets because they would throw themselves into harms way to protect society. We should extend such respect to good officials who would do no less. When was the last time you put yourself at risk to help people, your commmunity or save a life? Sometimes, when rogue elements undermine that trust and the good efforts of honorable people we have to correct to improve not only functional capacity through adaptation that comes from feedback but also encourge good people to also join/serve their communities. i.e improve recruitment.]

Other victims eventually came forward to lodge complaints and the information was intentionally shared with perpetrators and retaliated against to protect "The Clan". A few have gone as far to say there is preference in local court outcomes and preferences in the very application of law (One can't say if it is true or not but it is possible based on people's concerns and realized outcomes in this hypothetical example.).

Some of the examples include intentionally damaging kids for financial gain, manipulating of sick elderly, retaliating against whistleblowers, sexual coercion of vulnerable females, missing drug money, coordinated violence/intimidation, pushing underage victims to commit suicide, cover ups of evidence, freedom of speech violations, targeting people who practice certain religions, etc. All the bad things one can think of.๐Ÿค”๐Ÿคจ

(Again, these are just examples put together that create an understanding of some risks if a certain logic and line of thinking is used by and acted on by an inner group. If you trace those complaints and issues back you can define the edges of who is involved.  Add that to other evidence from various sources and a fuller picture emerges. In this example people talk about who is and is not above the law due to these social connections. Awareness seems to be a natural check on unfettered advantage)

This would indicate in this example there is not a commitment to the health of the institution, the laws by which that institution is mandated and the essential values of the system (Its just a philosophical discussion so relax because it will have a positive end.๐Ÿ™†). It was easier to force the victims to accept the outcomes of hate and corruption than it was to change or adjust toward full functioning. The bad actors of a clan based system sought to protect itself and in that process the local decision makers discounted the lives and values of the victims (In the example investigations into clan members blocked but opened on people who raised concerns as pattern.)

We can of course change this and we need to do that for the health of the system as well as to protect future victims. Change can be a good thing when it takes rogue elements that work against trust in the system that negatively piggy backed on the positive societal good will toward faithful men and women who serve honorably every day. We should support a strong, functioning justice system that is in alignment with our national values and raises up lofty forefounder ideas such as liberty and justice for all. That will be hard if we do not willingly change or accept opportunities to reach to the next rung needed for a new era.

Many of us have more patriotic faith than others that justice will eventually prevail despite those who actively undermine it and the overall health/trust of the institution. (Think about the damage such networks who engage in hate and corruption do to the whole system. Really take a minute and think about it, as we seek to create high levels of trust and performance.). We have faith that good can overcome wrong and eventually can chisel away at the hearts of stone that did the opposite of what would have been expected, needed or legal. Trust in the long-term purpose versus the tempest of the times.

I looked around for some resources and found this pretty good analysis from Yale on corruption (A top notch school for rich kids. Attracts talent like Harvard. They both do a lot of research. I took three classes from Harvard. For a humble beginning guy like me that received nothing, perhaps less than nothing, from anyone I thought it was pretty cool. Notice where the hard knocks empathy comes from. My other path in life would have been a contractor and built houses or a small business owner. Choices and responsibilities....). Seems very well written. A little dated now. Trust, Honesty, Corruption

There are the smaller and bigger responsibilities to society. This seems fitting for this discussion.

"Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights." Thomas Jefferson to Richard Price, January 8, 1789

*This is a hypothetical philosophical thought experiment for learning purposes. A wider point on freedom of speech and religion. A typeb model formed with 4 stages. 1. Default, 2. Dehumanization, 3. Acceptance, 4. Community resilience. Not sure if there is a 5. Thinking about it. Take with a grain of salt and feel free to aggree or disagree. Many different perspectives of the same issue and they are important issues that warrant mature dialogue. If it generates discussion it has done its duty.
