2026 Firefighting Service Index: Response Times and Participation

It takes a unique dedication to balance a regular job and life with part-time or volunteer firefighting, especially given the extensive training and ongoing effort required to stay active.

(Illustrative only)

Department statistics reflect many of the structural challenges volunteer departments face today. Medical calls make up a growing share of emergency responses, requiring members in some departments to maintain EMT or emergency response-level skills alongside traditional firefighting techniques. At the same time, brush and wildland fires are becoming year-round concerns rather than seasonal events.

Response times naturally reflect these realities. While initial turnouts can be quick, delays often happen during standard work hours when volunteers must leave their jobs, change into gear, and travel to the station. This dynamic frequently relies on retirees or members with flexible schedules to serve as initial responders, and it explains why departments maintain larger rosters to ensure enough people can respond at any given moment.

Encouraging younger generations to join remains crucial. As environmental factors and community needs evolve, having a strong network of dedicated local responders is essential for community resilience, offering a meaningful way to serve society beyond daily work routines.

*If your interested in some virtual fitness training or donating to an excellent fire department in the UP let me know. I do virtual fitness training and have a trainer, yoga, and other certifications. I also do some coaching. Likewise, when I can connect up one of our departments with grants I will do that. A lot of young people so money for training, equipment, etc. would be appreciated.
