Free Diving Fishing-Shiny Green Things Seem to Attract Them

 I went fishing again—or at least that's what I'm calling it. I was really swimming around, snorkeling, and free diving, looking to see what I could find. Each time I go back, I seem to learn something new.

This time, I found a little spot where the fish seemed to congregate. And honestly, I could see why. The rocks actually went farther out than I had realized, giving the fish plenty of hiding places. Then there were some weeds farther out, so they basically had a nice little fish neighborhood: rocks for security, weeds for food, and me showing up to ruin the whole thing.

I wasn't really even fishing for the most part. I was just exploring. If I happened to find something I could spear, like a whitefish, or catch with a lure, like a bass, that would have been fine. I found some fish hiding out there, although these particular ones were probably too small to catch. I just followed them around for a while, which I'm sure they appreciated.

Then, as I was coming back toward shore, two enormous shadows went right past me. I didn't have my  camera out, of course, because apparently that's the exact moment when you're supposed to see something interesting. These fish were big—probably three times the size of the ones I'd been watching. They were big enough that I really wanted to get some video, but naturally, they disappeared before I could do anything about it.

I did learn something interesting, though. I pulled out one of my little green lures, and I still hadn't put any bait on it. I just dropped the weighted green thing into the water, and the fish immediately came over to investigate.

They'd swim up, check it out, apparently realize, "Wait a minute... there's nothing here," and then swim away.

But every time I dropped that little green lure back down, they came right over again. So apparently I had their attention; I just hadn't gotten around to providing lunch yet.

I'm thinking that if I actually put some bait on that thing, they might have taken a pretty serious bite at it. So, I didn't catch anything this time, but I learned where the fish are hanging out, what they're interested in, and that apparently even fish will inspect something suspicious if you dangle it in front of them often enough.

That's fishing, I guess. Sometimes you catch fish. Sometimes you catch nothing. And sometimes you spend an afternoon snorkeling around having conversations with fish that refuse to commit.
