We all have a stake in the way this nation turns out. Some feel they are more entitled than others and that is a shame. It is even more of a shame if we fail to grasp the significance of that in a diverse society. A nation of equality requires commitment to that equality as individuals and institutions. Sometimes we find bad actors within the system that not only watch as hate behaviors occur but also then fail to correct when such behaviors are well known.
No one is immune to this corrupting level of bias. Ones race or religion doesn't make them more or less biased than others. Those arguments are mute (Social connections and perception do make a difference in the acceptance and promotion of hate.). What we know is that based in human nature that people will differentiate and because this does occur then we need greater protections from it when it does (Some will say it happens a lot and some will say rarely.)
Hate speech is often promoted by those who lack empathy and further fostered when the counter narrative is silenced in order to encourage a single perspective reigns supreme (We may include rewarded and protected by hate.). Add a little corruption into the mix and you will see some third world magic occuring. 🧙
Change isn't about getting people in trouble, or winning/loosing poorly constructed arguments, but about ensuring their is a line of continuity from one generation and the next. It is not even the single incident of failed justice that define all. It is the commitment to a shared perspective of freedom that is of paramount importance. Each failed effort adds to the collective conscious and social underpinnings.
Words count in hate narratives....
The study discusses how empathy, narrative and reduced victimization are helpful in adolsecents. It probably would work in some form or another for adults. From hate speech to HateLess. The effectiveness of a prevention program on adolescents’ online hate speech involvement
This study discusses how the more people engage and are exposed to hate speech the more desensitized they become. Its important to find ways to counter hate and find new ways of creating a stronger sense of shared identity. You can read something similar at Counteracting Hate and Dangerous Speech Online
*This is a hypothetical learning example of when corruption, hate and extremism mix. It is as type of thought experiment on freedom of religion, freedom of speach, the Constitutional and human/civil rights. Take with a grain of salt as this hypothetical example has a very positive outcome. A nugget of insight that isn't for sale but can be earned from self-reflection and deep thought.
